Dhigurah Island is arguably one of the most stunning hidden gems in the Maldives. Unlike the renowned overwater resorts, Dhigurah is a local island boasting a long, picturesque white sand beach.
For travelers looking to experience the Maldives on a budget, Dhigurah is an ideal destination. It offers all the breathtaking tropical scenery synonymous with the Maldives, along with family-owned hotels that start at just $70 USD per night.
Our recent trip took us to two local islands in the Maldives — Dhigurah and Fulidhoo — and we were thrilled with our choice. Both islands were charming and offered unique experiences.
This travel guide will cover everything you need to know about visiting Dhigurah Island, including how to get there, what activities to enjoy, where to stay, and other essential information.
Where To Stay In Dhigurah
How To Get To Dhigurah Island
Dhigurah lacks its own airport, necessitating travelers to initially land at Male International Airport (MLE), the Maldives’ capital, situated approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) away. Upon arrival in Male, options include boarding a speedboat or ferry for a direct journey to Dhigurah, or opting for a seaplane or domestic flight to one of the neighboring islands, followed by a boat ride to reach Dhigurah.
By Public Speedboat
The primary mode of transportation to reach Dhigurah is by utilizing public speedboats, which was our chosen means of travel. Departures occur daily, both in the morning and afternoon, originating from Male airport and the city.
The duration of the speedboat journey to Dhigurah spans approximately 2 hours, with a cost averaging around $50 USD per person for a one-way trip. Children aged 3 and above are charged full fare.
Typically, the boat ride maintains a relatively smooth course, contingent upon weather conditions. Onboard facilities include a restroom and ample storage space for luggage. The vessels boast modern amenities, featuring comfortable seating arrangements, along with complimentary bottled water for passengers.
Departures from Male to Dhigurah are scheduled for 11 AM and 4:30 PM (10 AM on Fridays), while return trips from Dhigurah to Male depart at 6:30 AM and 1:30 PM (1:45 PM on Fridays). En route to Dhigurah, a brief stopover is made at Dhangethi island.
However, it’s important to note that multiple speedboat companies operate along this route, and the timetable may undergo occasional revisions. Hence, it’s advisable to cross-reference the schedule with your accommodation provider in Dhigurah prior to departure.
To streamline the process, travelers can enlist the assistance of their Dhigurah-based lodging to arrange speedboat bookings, settling the fare upon arrival via their room invoice. This method, which we personally utilized, alleviated the need to carry substantial cash reserves throughout our journey.
By Private Speedboat
Booking a private speedboat for your transfer to Dhigurah from other Maldivian islands may come at a higher cost compared to public speedboats, yet it offers unparalleled convenience, especially when time-saving and a direct connection are priorities. You can easily arrange this service through your Dhigurah hotel.
By Domestic Plane
One of the smoothest ways to reach Dhigurah is by catching a brief 20-minute domestic flight via Villa Air / FlyMe from Male to Maamigili island’s airport (VAM). From there, a short 5-minute taxi ride to the harbor precedes a 20-minute speedboat journey to Dhigurah.
Typically, there are 3 or 4 flights available daily along this route, with one-way ticket fares starting at $170 USD for adults and $85 for children under 12 years old; toddlers under 2 fly complimentary. The cost usually covers the speedboat transfer. However, should sea conditions become too turbulent for regular boat travel, this option might be the sole means of reaching Dhigurah.
By Seaplane
Opting for a seaplane adventure offers a thrilling and picturesque route to Dhigurah, albeit at a higher cost. Prices for tickets kick off at $250 USD per individual, encompassing a 30-minute scenic flight to the Lux Resort in the South Ari Atoll, succeeded by a swift 10-minute speedboat journey to Dhigurah. Since seaplane flights lack a fixed timetable.
It’s imperative to coordinate arrangements in advance with your hotel. With any luck, you may be able to share the flight with fellow passengers headed in the same direction.
By Public Ferry
Finally, an alternative option is to board the public ferry from Male to Dhigurah. While it’s the most leisurely choice, it’s also the most economical. The ferry voyage to Dhigurah spans approximately 6 to 7 hours and entails a one-way fare of $8 USD. MTCC operates this route on multiple days weekly, offering both morning and evening departures.
To stay updated on the current schedule, you can reach out to MTCC directly or consult your Dhigurah hotel, which can also assist with ticket purchases.
How To Get Around The Island
After arriving in Dhigurah, the next step is navigating the island. Fortunately, the island’s compact size makes it easy to explore on foot. Dhigurah stretches 4 kilometers (3 miles) in length and is only 100 to 200 meters wide, giving it a long and narrow shape. This walkability is one of Dhigurah’s appealing features, as it eliminates the need for transportation costs. However, if you prefer, hotels offer bicycle rentals for half-day or full-day use.
Best Things To Do In Dhigurah Island
North West Beach / Bikini Beach
Dhigurah’s primary beach, North West Beach, stretches along the entire western side of the island. This designated ‘bikini beach’ welcomes tourists to wear swimsuits and enjoy sunbathing. The beach is stunning, lined with palm trees, dotted with hermit crabs, and typically uncrowded. The calm waters make it safe for children to swim, and on clear days, it’s a perfect spot to watch the sunset.
For snorkeling enthusiasts, Turtle Reef, located midway along the beach, offers the chance to swim with baby sharks and sea turtles just a short distance from the shore. Dhigurah boasts one of the longest beaches in the Maldives, a feature that inspired its name, which means ‘long island’ in the local language.
Long Beach Sandbar
One of Dhigurah’s main highlights is Long Beach, the sandbar at the island’s southern tip. This picturesque spot features pristine white sand and shallow turquoise waters, ideal for swimming or leisurely walks.
From the hotels in northern Dhigurah, the sandbar is about an hour’s walk along the beach or through the jungle. The jungle path is preferable for its shade and the chance to spot lizards and other wildlife.
The best time to visit the sandbar is around 9 or 10 in the morning when it’s less crowded and the sun is milder. If walking isn’t appealing, you can also reach it by bicycle or rickshaw from your hotel.
At low tide, you can follow the sandbar to the neighboring LUX Resort, but remember, entry is restricted to resort guests. Be sure to bring plenty of water, as there are no facilities to buy drinks at the sandbar, and it can get extremely hot at midday. Free sun chairs and umbrellas are available near the end of the beach where you can leave your belongings while you swim.
How Long To Stay
Dhigurah is a compact island, allowing you to explore its main attractions in just 2 or 3 days, though extending your stay is tempting. We spent 3 days there and would have gladly stayed for a week or two!
If you share our love for the beach and ocean swimming, you’ll find it endlessly enjoyable. Additionally, spending a few more days to see whale sharks and embark on other excursions around the island is well worth it.
